Week 2 Power Rankings

Week one is in the books and now we get our first look at power rankings. I'll try to keep pre-season bias out of this and have them reflect how well the teams are playing on the floor. You could see some major changes from week to week early on in the season.

1. Duke (3-0)

Last Week: W 79-71 vs (neutral) Kentucky, W 82-56 vs Army, W 67-56 Campbell

This Week: vs Gardner-Webb, vs Lafayette

Duke had the best win of the week in the conference over Kentucky. Coach K looks like he might have a national title contender. They'll get a few more tune up games before playing Gonzaga on November 26th.

2. Virginia Tech (2-0)

Last Week: W 82-47 vs Maine, W 77-57 @ Navy

This Week: vs Radford, vs St. Francis, vs Merrimack

The Hokies had the second best win of the week by knocking of a Navy team that beat UVA in Annapolis. The offense is rolling so far for Mike Young's team.

3. Syracuse (2-0)

Last Week: W 97-63 vs Lafayette, W 75-60 vs Drexel

This Week: vs Colgate

The Orange were down at half against Drexel, but they woke up in the 2nd half and pulled away to stay perfect on the year so far. Buddy Boeheim is averaging over 20 points through their first 2 games. Syracuse gets a Colgate team that took NC State to the wire next Saturday.

4. Florida State (1-1)

Last Week: W 105-70 vs Penn, L 55-71 @ Florida

This Week: vs Tulane, vs Loyola Marymount (Fabletics Jacksonville Classic)

FSU looked amazing against Penn, but then dropped one against their rival Gators. Florida is now ranked in the top 25 in KenPom so this isn't a bad loss on the road and this was a back and forth game that got away from FSU in the last ten minutes.

5. North Carolina (2-0)

Last Week: W 83-67 vs Loyola (MD), W 97-87 vs Brown

This Week: vs College of Charleston, Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-Off vs Purdue & Tennessee/Villanova

Carolina has their offense figured out, but needs some work on the defensive end. Brown should not be able to keep up with them, but they ultimately got the win. They have a get right game against Charleston before a huge weekend in Connecticut.

6. NC State (2-0)

Last Week: W 88-70 vs Bucknell, W 77-74 vs Colgate

This Week: vs (neutral) Central Connecticut, vs (neutral) Oklahoma State, vs Texas Southern

NC State lost Manny Bates in the first minute of their season, but they managed to win both of their games so far. They'll have to figure out how to play smaller than they originally planned for. Oklahoma State will be a nice challenge Wednesday night.

7. Notre Dame (1-0)

Last Week: W 68-52 vs Cal State Northridge

This Week: vs High Point

Notre Dame didn't open their season until Saturday and only play one game this week, but KenPom has them as a top ten offense in the country. We'll find out a lot more about the Irish when they go to Vegas for the Maui Invitational next week.

8. Clemson (2-0)

Last Week: W 64-53 vs Presbyterian, W 76-68 vs Wofford

This Week: vs Bryant, Shriners Children's Charleston Classic (3 games)

Clemson's defense looks like they're going to keep them competitive in a lot of games this year. They head to Charleston for a three day event with a pretty good field. Hopefully things will fall right and they'll get to play St. Bonaventure.

9. Virginia (1-1)

Last Week: L 58-66 vs Navy, W 73-52 vs Radford

This Week: @ Houston, vs Coppin State

An ugly loss and a dominate win puts UVA in the middle of the rankings. Virginia has a huge non-conference matchup Tuesday night at Houston.

10. Louisville (1-1)

Last Week: W 72-60 vs Southern, L 80-72 (OT) vs Furman

This Week: vs Navy, vs Detroit Mercy

Louisville was without their head coach and Furman is a good mid-major program, but that loss snapped a 59 game home winning streak in the month of November. They'll get a chance to start a new streak tonight against a Navy team looking for their second win against an ACC foe.

11. Georgia Tech (1-1)

Last Week: L 69-72 vs Miami (OH), W 77-52 vs Stetson

This Week: vs Lamar, @ Georgia

That was a bad loss on opening night, but the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a blowout win on Friday night. They travel across the state for an ACC/SEC rivalry on Friday to play Georgia.

12. Wake Forest (2-0)

Last Week: W 77-59 vs William & Mary, W 87-75 vs Western Carolina

This Week: vs Charleston Southern, vs North Carolina A&T

William & Mary and Western Carolina are probably not going to be very great teams, but Wake Forest is undefeated and that's all they care about. They have 2 more winnable games this week.

13. Miami (1-1)

Last Week: W 77-67 vs Canisius, L 95-89 vs UCF

This Week: @ FAU, vs Florida A&M

Miami lost a shootout against UCF, but that may end up not being a bad loss. The Hurricanes are playing all of the Florida schools and only leave the state twice before traveling to Cameron Indoor on January 8th.

14. Boston College (3-0)

Last Week: W 73-57 vs Dartmouth, W 85-55 vs Holy Cross, W 72-64 vs Fairfield

This Week: @ Rhode Island, Sunshine Slam vs Utah & Tulsa/Rhode Island

Earl Grant has the Eagles 3-0 on the year and I really wanted to put BC higher on this list, but those are 3 bad teams they just beat. I see BC, Wake, and Miami all on the same level.

15. Pittsburgh (0-2)

Last Week: L 63-78 vs The Citadel, L 59-74 @ West Virginia

This Week: vs UNC Wilmington, vs Towson

There's no shame in losing in Morgantown, but there definitely is in losing to The Citadel. Pitt will probably be last on this list all year.
